  1. Huck does everything he can to make sure him and Jim are safe on the island. It shows through Huck’s personality and ways that he is concerned and truly cares for Jim. This is shown when Huck decides to go ashore and retrieve any information he can. He knows he must willingly go risking himself instead of Jim becasue Jim would be more apparent becasue of his dark skin. Also Huck shows concern for Jim when the women ashore tells him there is money out for Jim’s arrest and she says her husabnd is to go to the island with a gun and look for Jim that night. Huck as quickly as possible retuns the island and tells Jim they must escape in order to keep himself and more importantly Jim safe.

    • i agree with this statement that Huck has changed his personality and isn;t as selfish as he was and he grew to be more caring about others. I think another example would be that he feels sorry for putting the snake in his sleeping bag and felt sorry about it.

    • I feel what you have is on the right track. I feel that you need to elaborate just a little mroe on what you are trying to get across.

  2. 1. They would call him that because he says he’s something but he lies and he’s being hypocritical. the society is being hypocritical because everyday society lies daily well most of the time.
    2. Twain uses satire because he makes a character say “i own myself” and that pretty much means he ran away so he pretty much owns himself. Twains views on slavery are sad because he thinks its bad for people to treat others like they do to jim.

    3. He keeps jim safe when he keeps his secret when jim escapes. If he told somebody that he saw jim escape, jim would be killed. There putting reward for jim if they captured him. The reward is 300 dollars worth. Hucks attitude towards all this is nervousness because he does not want to have jim killed but then huck needs the money.

    • For number one and two i do agree with those statments, due to the fact that It really is a Hypricital statement and that society is very obnoxious . I also agree with Richard on number two cause Jim is saying he owns himself so therefor thats the reason he runs away. Number three however i do not agree with due to the fact he shows that he cares about Jim by not turning him in and telling Jim about the fire and how the guy with the gun is coming to the island later on.

    • I agree because Huck did want to keep Jim safe after he found out their was an award for Jim’s missing. I belive Huck didn’t want to be alone and he needed Jim’s help to help them both survive.

  3. 8-
The irony in Huck’s statement that he will be called a “low down Abolitionist” is that he is actually doing the right thing in helping Jim and that all of the people in town think that he is dead, so he wouldn’t be going back there. Twain’s message about the hyprocritical values of society is that people think that it is wrong to help salvery and that wanting salvery to be abolished is something to be ashamed of when it is actually good and people should be equal.
Twain’s use of satire in Jim’s statement that he feels richer because he owns himself shows that Twain doesn’t approve of salvery. He is making fun of the way Jim feels because he is free and is owning himself. Miss. Watson was going to sell him for a lot of money so Jim feels that he is worth that money and since he ran away he owns himself. Twain shows that he thinks that salvery is wrong and that all people should be equal and no one should own another person.
    11-
Huck feels bad about the snake that he hid in Jim’s sleeping bag and the mate that bit him. Jim was hurt for a couple of days and Huck felt bad for doing that to him. Huck promised to himself that he wouldnt touch anymore snake skins to bring them bad luck. Another example of Huck protecting Jim from danger is when Huck was at Mrs. Judith Loftus and she was talking about the murder. Most of the people in the town believed that Jim had killed him. Huck was about to say something, but stopped himself because it could of gotten them into trouble. When Huck got back to the island, he just told Jim to get up and leave because people were coming for them. Jim listened and was sacred but Huck was protecting him. Huck could have just left Jim and escaped alone, but he went back and got Jim.

    • I agree with everything you have said in your response. When you said that he is truly doing the right thing even though society says he isnt you are absolutely correct. You bring up the topic of irony very well by responding to the question with this.

  4. 1. The Irony in Hucks statement is that they are both run away slaves and if Jim gets called a “low down Abolitionist” that also makes Huck a “low down Abolitionist” because they both are on the down low from society and running from society.

Twain uses satire because when he makes Jim says “I own my self” it means to him that he is worth something no matter if he’s a run away slave or a slave he still thinks he’s woth $800. I guess Twains attitude towards slavery is that he makes them sound un educated and treated unfairly.
    2. At this point Huck doesn’t care about himself anymore he is more worried about Jims safety. He over heard what they were saying about Jim and he knew that it was his responsibility to protect jim no matter what.

    • I agree with your statement about the Irony in Huck’s statement. However, I dont think Huck was a runaway slave.I believe he was called a “low-down abolitionist” for helping Jim out and caring for him, but i do like the fact that you compared the two because they are both running away from their average lives.

    • I disagree, it is ironic because he is going against society by helping Jim who is a slave which is why Huck would be called a “low down abolitionist”. And Huck is “dead” and not really a runaway. and Twain is against slavery because of how it made people worth money and how a person could be worth $800.

  5. Mark Twain’s hypocritical view of society is portrayed greatly in these chapters. When he says Huck is a “low down Abolitionist he exposes this topic. His message is that people in society are really hypocritical and that abolitionists were not low down at all and they spoke what they believe so saying a “low down abolitionist” is hypocritical.

Twain uses a literary term known as satire to help tell the reader better understand Jim’s statement. Mark Twain uses this literary term to show the readers his view on slavery. Twain did not support slavery and believed it should have not been allowed when it was. In this book he told society what slavery was like and what the slaves were truly like.

Huck’s concern for Jim is shown in the snake incident when Jim tells Huck he will have bad luck after touching the snake skin then later Jim gets bit by a rattle snake and it was Huck’s fault.

    • I agree completely with your post. With Twain’s use of satire, the story receives a bit of comic relief. In the serious tone of the story, I feel this satire is neccessary.

  6. 1. The irony of Huck keeping the secret of Jim’s escape is that he is actually doing the right thing by helping Jim escape salvery. In society people think helping African Amercians escape slavery is wrong, but as Huck gets to know Jim better, he realizes that African Americans are just normal people. Twain’s message about the hypocritical views of society are that African Americans are just normal people, and they shouldn’t be discriminated against. The use of satire in Jim’s statement is that he really doesn’t himself, Miss Watson, his slave owner does. Twain’s attitude of slavery is that he is against it.

    2. Some events where Huck’s concern for Jim is evident in his behavior is when Huck dresses up as a girl, goes to town, and meets a woman who tells him that her husband is going to the island to look for Jim and Huck. Huck gets very worried and tells Jim they must leave the island right away. Huck could have not told Jim people were going to look for them and could have just worried about himself, but he really cares for Jim so he made sure he will be safe.

    • I agree with you so much because its true, huck goes out of his way to make sure that Jim is safe and hides and leaves the island to make sure he does not get caught. One thing you didn’t mention was how important the bond is that the te\wo guys are creating. They are getting really close and becoming great friends. The idea that Huck is White and Jim is black makes this relationship so much more interesting and it shows how Huck is maturing.

    • That was a good example of Hucks concern for Jim. I didn’t think about it like that! Another example of Hucks concern is when the prank that he pulled on Jim went wrong, and he felt really bad that he put Jim in danger. He makes a remark that he wouldn’t ever take ahold of a snake again now that he saw what it had done. Which also emphasizes that he felt bad.

  7. 1. The irony of Huck being called a low down abolitionist is that in society he isnt supoosed to help a slave. Slaves are at a lower social class then white men. The irony is that Huck is actually helping Jim and learns to except him for who he truely is. Huck learns that its okay to be a differant race. It does not matter. Twains message is that slavery is wrong and shouldnt be accepted in society. It is wrong and people need to over come there views and ideas about african americans. By writing this book Twain shows how terrible society was. In the statement “he owns himself” is a use or satire. This is satire because Miss Watson watson wants to sell him for 800 dollars. This makes Jim feel like he is worth a lot of money. So knowing that hes going to be sold Jim runs away and feels like he owns himself.

    2. As the story progresses huck and jim become really close and create a very close friendship. Huck knows that its his duty to protect Jim and the same goes for jim. Huck becomes very concered for Jim when the whole snake scene happened. After Jim got bit he felt very bad and knew he should have listened to Jim in the first place. Another time huck was concerned for Jim was when he went into town and met that lady. THey had discussed the murder and Huck had the oppertunity to get money and turn Jim into the police but he didnt. although he really needed the money. Once Huck found that the womens husband was going to the island to look for jim or huck, Huck new that he had to go to the island and leave as soon as possible. Huck wasnt being selfish because he could have just hid himself and not tell jim but he went all the way back to help Jim leave.

    • 1. I completely agree with your statement of the irony of Huck being a low down abolitionist because it is sociably wrong to help slaves escape. People looked down on slaves, and thought of them poorly, so it was not right to help those people. The irony of it is that it is morally right to help the slaves because all people are created equal.

  8. Huck protects Jim by keeping his secret of escaping cause if someone saw Jim escape they would kill him. Huck gets nevous about everything with jim, doesnt want him to get killed and doesn’t know if he should turn him in for the reward money.
Twain doesn’t like the idea of slavery cause the way they treat the people, just how they treat Jim. Twain some what makes fun of how Jim thinks he is rich cause by him running away is Jim saying “I own myself.”

    • I think he makes a good point about how jim would be killed if he gets caught. I agree when he says ” I own myself” because he pretty much does cause jim ran away. My opinion would be that Huck would need the money too becaue he ran away . He needs money to survive you know?

    • I agree with this statment that Huck in a way protects Jim but in futher moe Jim becomes more of a father figure to huck later on. Twain doesnt agree with slavery. When twain rights the statment that he owns himself, its like saying he is his own person and no one can.

    • I agree with you because Huck wants to stay with Jim and not be alone. Huck now understands he mustt reat Jim right to protect him.

    • I agree with how huck is trying to protect Jim showing that he cares about him and how he makes fun of slavery by making Jim happy about being free and owning himself making him rich for being worth $800.

  9. Its ironic because he’s doing the right thing by helping Jim and everyone in town thinks that hes dead, so he wouldnt really want to go back to the town. Its wrong to help salvery and want to abolishe it, you shouldnt be ashamed of something you stand for. Twains satire is that he feels richer because he now owns himself. Twain is showing with that, he doesnt approve of salvery. An example where he is concerned would be when Jim was almost sold for 800 dollars.

    • I agree with how it is ironic that huck is helping Jim and how Jim feels about being worth 800 dollars shows that mark twain was against slavery.

  10. Bailey Carothers

    Chapter 8
The irony in Hucks statement is that while Huck actually thinks that being a “low-down abolitionist” is wrong, he is actually doing the right thing. Huck is extremely nervous to help Jim out because his society has taught him that African-Americans are different, but when Huck spends time with Jim, he learns he is a good man and is just like anyone else and deserves concern and respect, making his statement ironic.

Twain uses satire in the statement that Jim “feels rich” because he owns himself and also shows his extreme dissaproval of slavery. Twain is a true believer in equality and does not believe that people should be sold into slavery.

    • i agree with this statement. although huck is nervous/scared to help jim he knows its right and like you said does whats right. i also agree with the statement that twain uses satire when jim says he “feels rich”. even though hes owned now that he has escaped he finally feels the freedom.

  11. Huck thinks that he is a low down abolitionist which is extremely ironic. Being an abolitionist is a thing that people would respects but in the story, Huck feels that he is doing something wrong because in his time era it is against the law. Twain desplays the fact that society is extremely hypocritcal and wrong in their views on slavery. Slavery is always wrong. Also, Twain uses satire when expressing the fact that “Jim feels rich” because he is worth 800 dollars and that he owns himself now that he has ran away. Twain believes that a human should not have a price, no matter what their race and hates slavery.

  12. It is extremely evident that Huck has began to become closer to Jim. When he goes to the women in the shack, she tells him of the reward for finding Jim. While readers may expect that Huck would turn Jim in, Huck does the exact opposite. The women also states that she saw smoke on Jackson Island and her husband is going their with a gun to look for Jim. Huck hurriedly goes back to the island to protect Jim and while he is their he builds a decoy fire and warns Jim. Huck obviously really cares for Jim.

  13. In my eyes i think Huck is doing the right thing, also he has become much more close to gym ever since Jim realized he might be sold. Many things happen to Huck that prove his loyalty to Jim for one when he goes to the womens shack and finds out theirs a reward for Jim. He also protects him by not turning Jim in when the women menches the fire on the Island and that theirs a man going to look for it out on Jackson Island that night. He then sets up a decoy for Jim to not get caught.

    • i agree with the following statment because Huck did do things that can prove he is a loyal person and that he has a good conscience.

    • I agree with this and adding to your statement, Huck grows as a person in learning to accept Jim because before he did not look at him the same as he does now. This reveals more about Hucks personality.

  14. One way Huck shows that he cares for Jim is that he feels sorrow for him after playing the snake prank on him. It wasn’t intended that he was to get bitten by the other snake.

  15. they would say Huck is a hypocrite because he would say or do something then do the exact opposite. Also this shows that society will judge you no matter what.

He uses satire when Jim decided to run away and said that he owns him self and nobody owns him. Twain does not like slavery because he feels no one should ever be treated like that.

He decided to do the right thing and keep Jims secret about his escape . If he told somebody that he saw jim escape, jim would not be alive right now . thats when a reward for jim came in captured him. The reward is 300 dollars for the slave . Hucks feels like something bad may happen to him eventually if any one finds out about what he is doing.

  16. Chapter 8

The irony is when Huck says he is a “low-down abolitionist”, he is acually doing the right thing. Huck is very nervous because society has taught him that African Americans are different. he spends time with Jim and he ends up seeing how much of a well respected person he is. Therefore this is ironic.

There is satire in this bookJim states that he “feels rich” because he owns with himself. Twain shows lots of equality and doesnt believe that people should be sold into slavery.

    Chapter 10-11

huck’s concern for jIm is in the snake incident. They will end up having bad luck due to touching the skin of the snake. Also even when the snake bites jim they will aslo have bad luck for that.

  17. The statement is ironic because Huck is not suppose to be helping a slave but he goes against what society says and does it anyway. Mark Twain shows the hypocritical values in society because they feel that slavery is right and should keep going even though it is actually the wrong thing to do and hurts the people. Twain is using satire saying that JIm is happy he is free because he is worth 800 dollars so he thinks he has worth. It shows how Twain is against slavery and thinks that it is stupid for someone to be worth money.

It shows that Huck cares for Jim just by being with him in the first place. Being caught with Jim could turn out bad for him, but he does it anyway knowing it isnt right. By playing jokes on Jim and feeling bad for hurting him and going into town risking people noticing him to see what is happening shows that he cares for Jim. And knowing he can easily tell people where JIm is.

  18. Chapter 8
There is a lot of irony in Hucks statement of being called a “low down abolitionist”. Huck doesn’t realize that the title shouldn’t mean anything, because in the end he will actually be doing the right thing (by helping Jim). I think that he doesn’t want to be called a “low down abolotionist” because that is not accepted where he lives Mostly all the people in his town look down on the abolotionists, and that is what Huck has been raised to know. The message about the hyprocritical values of Hucks society is that people think that it is wrong to help salvery. In a way, they make it seem like the people who want to abolosih is something to be ashamed But what Twain is trying to show is that in reality, it would be good if it were abolished, because people should be equal. The satire in Hucks statement would be about how Jim is proud that he would be sold for 800 dollars. Jim knows how much money that is, and this causes him to forget about the fact that he is being sold. It makes him feel that he is worth a lot, even though he runs away so he can “own himself.”
    Chapter 10-11
As soon as Huck and Jim landed on the island, we are able to see how important Jim really is to Huck. Huck goes above and beyond to protect Jim, and keep him away from danger. Even though Huck does mess up once (by putting the snake in Jims bed, causing him to be bit) he feels sorry about it. One of Hucks most caring moments would have been when he met the woman in the shack, who told Huck about Jim, and the reward that was being offered for returning him. People believed that since Jim had been missing recently, that he was the most likely person who had killed Huck. Instead of turning in Jim and collecting the reward, he didn’t. He stayed loyal to his new friend.

    • I agree with your statement. There is a lot of irony in Huck’s statement and that although being an abolitionist is seen as bad even though it is really a good thing, and the right thing. Also Huck does form an attachment to Huck and shows he does care about him.

  19. Chapter 8
There is alot of irony in Hucks statement because what Huck is trying to do is just help Jim and not be alone so he tries everyhting to help and keep Jim safe. People would look at Huck as a “low down abolitionist” becasue what Huck is doing is not accpeted in this era and people that live in Huck’s society. It’s hypocritical becasue it shows that most people would turn in Jim fo the reward and it wasn’t right for a white person to keeop a colored person’s secret.

  20. chapter 8
there is irony when Huck states that he will be called a“low down Abolitionist.” by keeping Jim’s secret. The irony is that Huck has the idea that this is a bad thing. However, in reality by doing this he will be doing the right thing. Huck is so used to hearing bad things about people who disagree with slavery that he has the wrong idea in his head. Twain’s message about the hypocritical values of society is, that although society has made being an abolitionist seem like a bad thing it is a actually nothing to be ashamed of. This shows how society’s values are all messed up and confused. Twain’s use of Satire in Jim’s statement is that he feels as though he owns himself even though he really has no power over himself at all because he can be sold. By being worth 800 dollars Jim feels valuable however he is mistaken.
    chapter 10-11
Huck’s starts to form a bond with Jim he starts to become close to him and develops concern for him which makes him protect Jim. This is shown when Huck decides to go ashore and retrieve information. Also when he is told about the reward for Jim instead of turning him in he decides to keep Jim safe and remain loyal to him. when Huck discovered that someone was going to go looking for Jim Huck rushes to the island to warn Jim.

  21. its ironic because Huck is actually doing the right thing. Although many people may think that hes doing the wrong thing hes not. Huck is helping him for who jim really is. it doesnt matter what race he is or what color and he is treating him like everyone deserves to be treated.
Huck shows that he cares about jim because after the snake incident Huck promises to never to do such a thing. he also shows he cares when huck runs into loftus and gets the news that they will be coming to island to look for jim, huck runs back to the island and tells jim they must leave becuase people are coming to look for him.

  22. Ch. 8
-Using “low down abolitionist” is irony because Huck is doing the right things by helping Jim out. Huck doesn’t think it the right thing at first because it’s against the law and people don’t usually do such a thing, especially since Jim is black. Huck soon learns that he’s doing the right thing. All of the people in town think he’s dead so he wouldn’t go back there anyways. Huck starts to care about Jim, he starts to understand him more. He learns to accept African Americans.
-Twain used satire to show the readers his view on slavery, he didn’t support it. He told the reality about slavery and didn’t sugar coat things.
    Ch.11
-When Huck puts the snake in Jim’s sleeping bag is when concern is reflected in his actions. Huck realizes that he shouldn’t have done it and he felt bad afterwards. That was one of the events that he realizes after that he needs to protect Jim from danger.

  23. Chapter 8
    >So I think that the irony of Huck’s statement of him being called a low down Abolitionist is that he is actually doing the right thing in helping Jim. Twain’s message about the hypocritical values of society is that people think that it is wrong to help slavery and wanting slavery to be abolished is something to look down upon, all people should be created equally it isn’t a bad thing its actually really good to help other people and Huck is doing the right thing by helping Jim. Huck thinks it’s bad at first to be helping a slave because of the law but then realizes that he is doing the right thing. Everybody in the town thinks that he is gone or dead so none of them think he will go back.
    >Twain used satire to show the readers his view on slavery, he doesn’t support it. When he says “I own myself” he says that because he ran away so he automatically thinks he’s his own person that he owns himself. Twain’s views on slavery are good and I agree I don’t think anyone should every be treated like that it’s not right.

    Chapter 11

    >Huck feels bad about the snake that he hid in Jim’s sleeping bag; the mate of the snake had bit him. Jim was hurt and of course Huck felt really bad for doing that to Jim and his concern for Jim is shown in his actions towards him. When they had got back to the island, Huck told Jim to get up and leave because he knew that people were coming for them and that something bad was going to happen and Jim listened to what he said but was scared but all Huck was doing was protecting jim from danger.
